One of the best things about backpacking and camping is that it is not limited to one season. You can enjoy going to a national park or your local mountain or desert anytime, noting the difference in the scenery from one season to the next. An essential when going out for more than a day hike is a sleeping bag and it can seem daunting to choose one with so many to pick from. I have compiled a list of videos and blog posts for you to help make the process of choosing the best sleeping bag a little easier.

Avoiding tent condensation.

Years ago, my wife and I decided to do a little snow camping. It wasn’t anything really to brag about, just setting up our tent out on a bank of snow next to the cabin where our friends and family members were sleeping cozily. I had heard about tent condensation, but didn’t know diddle about how to prevent it.

Image via Wikipedia

It was cold out. We zipped our down bags together and snuggled to keep warm. We talked and laughed. And, soon it began to rain. Did I say it was cold out? It was below freezing! So where did the rain come from?

It started raining inside our tent, not outside. When we could stand it no more, we packed up our soggy sleeping bags and retreated to the cabin with our tails between our legs. So much for snow camping that night.

Today, I know a bit more about tent condensation. So, I’ll share some rules for avoiding this bothersome problem.

Rule #1: If you don’t want moisture in your tent, don’t bring moisture into your tent. Remembering this rule will help you remember to apply most of the following rules starting with Rule #3.

Rule #2: If you don’t want it to rain in your tent, give moisture a way to get out of your tent.

Rule #3: Vent your tent. This is an application of rule #2. Yes, leaving your front door open and your bug screen closed may let in more cold air than zipping up the door, but that’s far better than waking up with your sleeping bag and clothes all sopping wet or covered with frost in the morning. Or worse yet, in the middle of the night when there is nothing you can do about it.

Rule #4: Leave your kitchen outside of your bedroom. Remember Rule #1 about not bringing moisture into your tent? Well, cooking in your tent will saturate the inside air and cover everything with moisture. Remember that your tent is a very small and confined . Use the vestibule or front porch of your tent for cooking if there is no way to set up your kitchen several yards away.

Rule #5: Leave all snow outside where it belongs. Any snow dragged in on your boots, backpack, gloves etc. is likely to turn into condensation.

Rule #6: Try not to breath inside your tent. Yes, it’s a joke. Sort of. But it illustrates a point. Your breath is laden with moisture. You can’t really stop breathing, but you can keep the talking and laughing to a minimum. Absolutely no singing.

Rule #7: Avoid breathing inside your sleeping bag. This one is not a joke. Being an even smaller confined space, condensation problems are multiplied inside your sleeping bag. Not only will you be soaked in the morning, but your bag will have gained a pound or more in weight. During the hours of the night, you exhale well over a quart of moisture.

Rule #8: Store all wet clothing in a stuff sack. Don’t try to dry them out in your sleeping bag.

Rule #9: In the morning, dry your sleeping bag in the sun. If the sun doesn’t peep over the mountains the morning, hopefully you can catch some rays later on.

Tent condensation is a problem that you can avoid by following the rules above. Snow camping can be fun you just need to have a little more knowledge for this special situation.~Richard Davidian, Ph.D.

Love the wilderness. Practice the Leave No Trace principle.

Wilderness is not only a place, but also a principle. As a place it can be located on a map and described. It can also be visited and enjoyed physically. It is tangible. As a principle, wilderness is intangible, residing only in the minds of people. Wilderness is like the velveteen rabbit. It’s being loved to death. Enter stage right the “Leave No Trace” principle which has been promoted since the 1970s.

Lovers of the wilderness seek a pristine and unspoiled wilderness for many different reasons. But, there are so many wilderness lovers that it risks losing its pristine and unspoiled qualities. Here are some ways you can do your part in maintaining a pristine and unspoiled wilderness for all to love and enjoy.

1. Plan Ahead. Know where you will camp and give yourself plenty of time before dark to choose and prepare a Leave-No-Trace (LNT) campsite. Inform yourself before leaving the trailhead about the following:

-weather,

-terrain,

-number of people likely to use the chosen campsite,

-camping restrictions,

-fire restrictions.

2. Take along the proper equipment for a low-impact stay. Such equipment can include such items as the following:

- a trowel for digging a cat hole;

-a warm sleeping bag and warm clothes so you won’t need a fire;

-sturdy footwear and gaiters so you can stay on muddy trails.

3. Pack it in – pack it out. Repackage your food. Remove all original packaging and put your food into plastic bags. Pack out all your trash. Leave nothing behind.

4. Choose a durable surface for pitching your tent. Here are the best:

- large flat rocks,

-sand bars,

-beaches,

-ice and snow.

Other less-durable surfaces may be used if none of the above surfaces are available. Here are some of those to choose from:

-leaf and needle litter,

-dry meadow grasses,

-sedges.

Avoid if possible the following vegetated surfaces:

-woody herbaceous plants,

-lichens,

-rotting logs,

-wet meadows,

-sparsely vegetated areas.

5. Forgo the campfire. Replace the romanticism of a campfire with the romanticism of watching the sunset and the appearance of the stars. Then go to sleep and rest your weary body.

6. Let the wildlife stay wild. Never feed wild animals. Doing so can habituate them to humans and can even make them dangerous. They need to maintain their wild ways and instincts to survive.

7. Respect other campers. Keep your voice low in volume and let other campers enjoy the serenity of the wilds.

Love the wilderness. Put into practice the Leave No Trace principle by following the advice outlined above. Take only photos. Leave only footprints. -Richard Davidian, Ph.D.

Ground Squirrel

Author:Stefan’s Page

The Los Alamos Campground, located in the Angeles National Forest, has been closed after a ground squirrel found there tested positive for the plague. Let me say that again, it tested positive for the plague!

The park was officially shut down on Saturday and will remain closed for at least ten days. During that time, officials will dust the squirrel burrows in the area for fleas in an attempt to prevent the spread of the disease. The plague spreads when infected rodents are bitten by fleas, who then go on to bite humans, passing along a bacteria that can bring on a severe fever, the chills, and a blood infection. In rare occasions, it can also lead to the pneumonic plague and possibly even death. Read more.

Backpacking hint: take along one or more heavy-duty trash bags - the lawn and leaf type. Here are 7 uses for this classy, not trashy, item.

The term “trash bag” is likely to evoke an image of something of rather lowly status. But, a large heavy-duty trash bag can be very useful in the wilderness. Even though it is designed to be disposable, it is really quite durable and it weighs mere ounces.

Below I will give some uses for heavy-duty trash bags, you know, the big black lawn and leaf, 42 gallon models.

Use #1: Emergency Rain Poncho: Just cut a hole for your head and two more for your arms. If you cut the hole slightly smaller than the diameter of your head and of your arms and force your head and arms into the holes, you’ll get a snug fit.

Use #2: Emergency Windbreaker Coat: If you need to add one more layer to avoid hypothermia, you can make a windbreaker coat with the same simple instructions for making a rain poncho. It won’t have any sleeves, but it can help keep your torso warm by blocking the wind.

Use #3: Moisture Barrier: You can use a heavy-duty trash bag as a moisture barrier when sitting on wet ground. Or you can use it between your sleeping bag and the damp ground. To double the length of the barrier, just slit the seams on both sides, but not on the bottom.

Use #4: Dry Sack: Store, in the bag, items that you want to make sure will stay dry in a downpour or in a tricky stream crossing.

Use #5: Emergency Backpack Rain Cover: Of course, a rain cover that is made specifically for your backpack will fit best. But, the trash bag will work in a pinch to keep things dry.

Use #6: Makeshift Patches: Using cutouts from a trash bag in combination with duct tape, you can temporarily patch almost anything from a sleeping bag to a tent.

Use #7: Firewood Protector: Store in the bag the precious firewood that you have collected in case the ground is wet or you expect rain. It will be much easier to light an emergency fire if the firewood is kept dry.

There you have seven useful applications for a heavy-duty trash bag in a backpacking setting. I’m sure you could think of more uses to add to the list. With that, I hope the trash bag will see a bit less trashy and somewhat more classy.
