It’s hard enough sleeping on rocky ground in a tent, let alone when you’re covered with aggravatingly itchy bites from flying biting insects. So, here are some tips on how to avoid those itchy spots on your skin.

Tip #1: Avoid hiking where there are flying bugs.

Ha ha. Thought I meant it, didn’t ya. Probably not. Oh, well.

We all know that insects are practically everywhere in this world.

It’s almost impossible to avoid them. So, let me revise my statement. Try to hike when there are fewer biting bugs. Do some research during your planning stage, and find out when the bugs are bad and when they are scarce in the area where you plan to hike. Choose a season when they are scarce.

And, if you must hike during a high season for airborne pests, here are some more tips for bug bite prevention.

Tip #2: Don’t wear these:

a. Perfume,
b. Hair spray,
c. Scented cosmetics,
d. Scented soaps,
e. Scented shampoo.

I’m sure you’re seeing a pattern here.

Tip #3: Do wear these:

a. Protective clothing (some articles of clothing actually have insect repellent in the fabric),
b. Insect repellent spray or creme (look for Deet as an ingredient),
c. A mosquito net (for really difficult cases or scary places).

Tip #4: Keep your hands and feet out of nooks and crannies that you can’t see inside of. This tip also reduces encounters with other nasties like rattlesnakes.

Tip #5: If you plan to camp in the wilderness, make sure the netting on your tent or bivy sack is intact and with no holes.

Thumb your nose at those inconsiderate, nasty and irritating flying biting insects with by following the above tips. Happy trails. Can you add more hints? Please share them in a comment. ~Richard Davidian, Ph.D.

Backpacking pillows: you have choices.

Backpacking is fraught with compromises: distance versus enjoyment of scenery; reduced weight versus comfort – to name a couple. Choosing between taking a backpacking pillow or leaving it at home is one compromise that has some options.

Compressible Pillows

You can get a compressible pillow as light as 2 to 3 ounces and with very small dimensions. This is a good choice if you don’t mind a few extra ounces and a reasonable loss of packable volume traded for an enhanced night’s sleep. You can find these at your outfitter.

Inflatable Pillows

Some inflatable pillows inflate on their own. Others require a few puffs of breath to make them fat enough for comfort. With one of these pillows, you can easily find your perfect comfort spot by increasing or decreasing the air pressure inside. Deflated, these pillows take up very little space and are low in weight. Inflatable pillows too you can find at your outfitter store.

The Non-Pillow Backpacking Pillow

This type of pillow takes the compromise to an extreme point. Just take along a stuff sack and stuff it with a jacket or other item of clothing. It works well, costs nothing and weighs virtually zero.

Choose your compromise, choose your backpacking pillow. But leave that fluffy one on your bed right where it is so you can enjoy it when you return home.

The mountain lion, also know as the cougar or the puma, is a very elusive animal. You are likely to never encounter one in the wilderness. Nonetheless, knowledge about this magnificent cat, added to all your overall knowledge of the wilds, could be very useful some day. Here are sources presenting facts about the mountain lion.
One of my esteemed Twitter followers, after reading one of my posts on bear attacks, asked if I could write a post outlining some facts about mountain lion attacks. Here’s my response.

MOUNTAIN LION ATTACKS ARE VERY RARE

Mountain lions (aka cougars, pumas and catamounts) rarely attack humans. They are very elusive creatures. You may be quite near one and never see it. They generally avoid human beings.

During the 13 years from 1991 to 2003 in the U.S. and Canada, 73 mountain lion attacks were reported. Ten of those attacks resulted in deaths. That’s a very large territory and a relatively low rate of attacks, about 5 and a half per year with less than one death per year. You’re much more likely to be killed by a neighbor’s dog then you are by a mountain lion (source).

But encounters and attacks do occur, and it is worth knowing what to do to stay alive in an encounter with one of these beautiful, but dangerous, cats.

GUIDELINES FOR AVOIDING A COUGAR ENCOUNTER

Here are some guidelines for avoiding an encounter with a mountain lion.

1. Before you leave for your hike, learn about the territory where you will be hiking and the wildlife that live there. Consult an authoritative source, like a ranger station, concerning the prevalence of cougars or other wild animals. Take note of any warning signs about the presence of and activities of local mountain lions.

2. The best deterrent for a cougar attack is hiking in a group. A cougar attack is a predatory attack. And, the more people that are in your group, the more the cat will think that killing the prey (you) will be difficult. He will be more inclined to look for smaller, easier prey like a rabbit, and you may never even see him.

3. Leave your dog at home if you are going into cougar country. You don’t want your canine buddy hightailing it back to you and jumping into your arms with a cougar on its tail.

4. Avoid hiking in the early morning and in the evening when mountain lions are the most active.

5. Don’t let your kids stray from your sight. Better yet, keep them very close.

6. Carry pepper spray or mace, and keep them within easy reach.

7. Watch for signs of cougars above you and behind you.

8. Avoid walking near where cougars like to hide to ambush prey: e.g. rocky outcroppings, ledges and brush.

9. Learn to recognize the behavior of a cougar that is about to attack: hiding, crouching, intense staring, creeping.

10. Instruct everybody in your group how to behave in cougar country and especially in an encounter. It only takes one person trying to run away to trigger a chase response in the predator.

HOW TO SURVIVE AN ACTUAL ENCOUNTER

Surviving a mountain lion encounter requires skilled and knowledgeable behavior. Here’s what to do and not to do.

1. Keep your cool. Avoid running, as difficult as this may be to do. Running away from a puma triggers a chase response since running is normal behavior for prey.

2. Give the animal an escape route. Stand your ground, but never approach a mountain lion. Back off slowly if you can, maintaining eye contact.

3. Based on the same principle of looking like difficult prey, make yourself look as large and tall as possible. If you have children with you, put one on your shoulders to look taller. If you are wearing a coat, spread it out. Wave your arms, trekking poles or backpack above your head. The purpose of doing this again is to look taller and more threatening.

4. If you are hiking with other people, huddle together. Put your kids behind you or inside the group. Keep staring at the predator.

5. Avoid bending over, crouching or kneeling, thus making yourself look more like prey. Do not turn your back on the lion.

6. Never play dead. This is not a good strategy with a mountain lion. Their attacks are predatory. And, since an attacking cougar considers you food, don’t make yourself look like easy food by lying down.

7. Put up an aggressive defense. Stare into the eyes of the cat. Bare your teeth. Make threatening noises. Snarl, growl. Again, the idea is to make the attacker think twice about attacking. Grab any kind of weapon you can find: pepper spray, a fat stick, a rock, a trekking pole, a camera – whatever you can get your hands on. Use your weapons to fight off the aggressor. Go for the eyes.

8. Do not defend your pet. It is much too risky. Sorry.

9. Scream “cougar” or something similar. You will get a quicker help response doing this than you would by just yelling “help”.

If you actually have an encounter with a mountain lion, record the facts about mountain lion attack. Report this information to whatever authority administers the area where the event has occurred. If there has been an injury in the encounter, do not disturb the site. This will help authorities to locate the dangerous animal.

Be aware. Be smart. Hike well.

Planning a hike?

Here are some things to add to your hiking checklist before you ever set foot on the trail.

1. Get in shape. If you are planning to do a long hike, do some daily walking and short hikes to condition your body. If you are planning a backpacking trip, wear whatever footwear you plan to use and don your pack with some weight in it – not too much at first. Add more weight gradually. If you are planning a hike that involves climbing to high elevations, do some shorter acclimatization hikes.

2. Make special medical preparations. For instance, if you are allergic to bees like my wife is, make sure you have epinephrine or whatever has been prescribed for you. Discuss your hiking plans with your healthcare provider and get approval or cautions.

3. Learn some survival skills. Learn how to make a lean to shelter. Learn some wild edible plants.

4. Brush up on your navigation knowledge and skills. Review the use of a map and compass. Test yourself on the use of your GPS. Get up to speed on what you might have forgotten.

5. Confer with your hiking buddies. Discuss destinations, routes, tasks etc.

6. Check your equipment. Especially go over your core items: shelter (tent or tarp), footwear, sleeping bag and backpack. Then, make sure you have all of the other items that you need like navigation equipment, food, a bear bag, a survival kit and a first aid kit.

7. Consult with authorities. Ask about the area where you will be hiking, whether it be a national park, a state park or private lands, for any permits, reservations, guidelines, regulations or restrictions pertinent to your hiking or backpacking plans.

8. Check the weather. Be sure to cover the full the time period of your hike if possible. Apply what you find out to your choice of clothing and other equipment.

9. Set up your itinerary. Inform your family or friends of your itinerary and route.

10. Plan for emergencies. Plan out what you will do in an emergency. Make sure you have the needed equipment for a medical or other emergency.

11. Prep the kids. If you plan to hike with children, make sure that they are prepared in every way.

That’s the end of the hiking checklist.

Remember, plan well – hike well.
